Does God Exsist?

First in understanding the God/No God conundrum, we must first start with some of the basic definitions required to properly grasp the construct of the God issue.

Faith- Belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence.

Belief- Something believed or accepted as true, especially a particular tenet or a body of tenets accepted by a group of persons.

Fact/Truth - Knowledge or information based on real occurrences

    1. Something demonstrated to exist or known to have existed:

    2. A real occurrence; an event: had to prove the facts of the case

If we can agree to understand these words in the same way then the rest of what I have to say will be easier.

The existence of GOD, is not and can not be a fact. This is a painful thing for some people to be told so definitely, but it is indisputably the truth, the existence of GOD can never be proved.

This does not belittle some ones faith or beliefs. It is only to paint the concepts of faith and belifies with the proper brush. God is a belief, regardless of how vehemently some one BELIVES in something, that will not make it a fact.

This concept is also equally applicable to atheist. Just as plainly as you can never prove the existence of GOD you would also be at a fault to claim that the non-existence of GOD was a fact. This is also a belief, albeit a belief in nothing, but still, can not be a fact, has to be a belief.

The very simple way to understand what is belief and what is fact is to figure out weather it belongs in the domain of science or religion.

I have had a Christian look up in the sky and tell me, “Look, there is a rainbow, that proves to me that there is a God, that something so beautiful could exist.”

This is a beautiful statement, but a piss poor level of Proof for anything.

It would be proof to say, I believe that white light is made of many colors, because I can see the rainbow as the light is refracted by the raindrops.

It is completely acceptable to see the rainbow and that reaffirms your FAITH that there is a GOD, but nothing with out substantial physical evidence, can be PROOF.

So how is one to know whether or not to believe in GOD?

Pay attention now, this gets wiggy...

There was once a very smart man named Schroedinger. In trying to demonstrate some of the unusual properties of partials he came up with a theory. The story goes like this in it's most basic form.

There is a cat in that box.
You can not open the box.
You know that the cat is either Alive or Dead.
You must do a math problem about the cat.
The Living-ness or dead-ness of the cat is important to the math.

The solution?

The cat is BOTH. In order to do the math correctly, you can not do it twice and get two answers.

You must count the cat as being both alive and dead.

Not make allowances for either, but accept and trust that both are true.

This should then also be the way one looks at/to/or for God.

We know that God/not God is unknowable. Many things of a spiritual nature are in fact Unknowable.

I think that things that can not be known, should not ever be the cornerstone of some ones spiritual quest. Other things are completely unknowable are, but not limited to are:

  1. reincarnation

  2. any kind of an after life (I wont KNOW till I'm dead)

  3. the nature of and/or the will of GOD

  4. the structure of the world beyond, or even if it's there.

  5. The soul.

It's not that I do or do not believe in any of these things, it's only that I accept that I can not KNOW them.

This acceptance of ignorance does not conflict with my faith. It is only an affirmation of faith to admit, that I do not know. And by allowing the possibility of uncertainty I can understand better that what my beliefs are are not universal, but rather individualized.

Even in the most dogmatic of faiths, no two persons have the exact same relationship with god.

Even among Atheist there are ever differences in not beliefs.

I have met atheist who believe that abortion is murder. Not because of a soul, but because genitally the DNA is human.

While others who don't believe in God will say that abortion is always an acceptable procedure, because it's not a baby till it's born.

As I said, things that can be known as facts are limited to things that can be measured by science. Science is not in opposition to religion, and religion should not ever be in opposition to Science.

They are two completely separate ways of talking about different parts of the same thing.

There is no where in the Bible the Torah the Qur'an or in the sacred writing of the Buddha, or in any other “Spiritual” texts that I failed to mention by name, claim to teach Sciences.

Conversely, Science is not in the business of contradicting with the teaching of these books.

Religions teach the WHY of the universe, not the how.

Science Teaches the HOW. That is all.

So you belong to the camp that like to pick up other peoples knowledge, gain at least a cursory understanding of it, and then vomit it back up in front of people who haven't read as much as you, so you can impress others with your deepness?

Let me know if I'm close on this. Or don't.

Some one who finds gods in everything might as well be finding kitty liter. Something that easy to find and understand, has no value.

But I don't think, understanding is a major goal for you, evidenced by your reference to “Showing off to others” implied.

The fact that you describe yourself as enlightened implies a weakness of caricature where your enlightenment is concerned.

Enlightenment is not something, If you had it, that you would chose to display as bragging rights. This is why priest dress in black, it distracts away from the enlightenment they carry, which when it is truly present, tends to frighten people. (mind you I'm not implying that ALL priest are truly enlightened, but this is the logic for the distinctive garb.)

But, I do not intend this to come off as a flame, I'm sorry if it did. This is just the opinion of one man, who was given to much time to think about things. Nothing personal.

I do appreciate your comments, and i will keep the post coming, I have many pieces in this vein, and knowing that someone feels that this is worth commenting on means that others of this ilk will likely be posted.

Again, sorry if this felt like a flame, and I do appreciate your comments and it's nice to know it's being read.

Thanks,

Andy
